Why “The Cycle”?
Baseball is cyclical. It is born anew in the spring, blossoms in the summer, bursts into beautiful colors in the fall, and gathers around the Hot Stove in the winter. Every year is different, but also the same. I’ve covered those seasonal changes in baseball for a variety of publications over the last two decades. When I started, I wrote directly to a small, loyal audience as one of the first wave of baseball bloggers. Now, I have circled back to do so again, and I hope you’ll join me. Pull up a chair, let’s watch some baseball together!
What is The Cycle?
The Cycle was created as a general-interest newsletter for Major League Baseball fans written by a former lead baseball writer at SI.com and national columnist for The Athletic and Sports on Earth who has also written for Baseball Prospectus, USA Today, SB Nation, and The Hardball Times, among many others. It included coverage of all 30 teams and followed the MLB news cycle with level-headed, fact-based analysis and historical context. In the last year or so, the publication has scaled back to become a free, semi-regular newsletter, but it remains the work of a dedicated baseball fan who derives great joy from the game’s history and its aesthetics, with a particular interest in uniforms and baseball cards.
During its first season of publication, The Cycle included regular coverage of the pennant races, awards races, transaction analysis, injury updates, Hall of Fame commentary, uniform rankings, game previews and highlights, and much more. Those remain areas of interest, but the newsletter is less motivated by the news cycle now. Rather, it is becoming a space for me to share whatever it is about baseball that has been occupying my mind most recently. The exact date and time of publication of individual issues may change from week to week, and may even skip weeks or multiple weeks. Your feedback and questions are always welcome.
How do I get it?

The newsletter is free, so sign up, forget about it, and every so often you’ll get a little surprise helping of baseball thoughts and information in your inbox.
